SUMMARY:Trail Towns & Blueways
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 27\, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. Friends of the St. Clair River is continuing their monthly speaker series by offering a free presentation and showcase on “Blueways\, Trail Towns and the Island Loop Route National Water Trail”. The class will be led by Lori Eschenburg\, a planner with the St. Clair County Metropolitan Planning Commission. One of Lori’s many exciting recent projects was the Blueways of St. Clair website.  The purpose of this award-winning project was to highlight St. Clair County’s bountiful blueways and greenways for recreation.  Because of the Blueways project in St. Clair County\, we now have the very first National Water Trail in Michigan! The presentation will last 45 minutes and meets at the St. Clair County Administration Building Auditorium\, 200 Grand River Avenue\, Port Huron. \nLori’s presentation will focus on three interrelated programs; The Blueways of St. Clair\, the Island Loop National Water Trail in Port Huron\, and the Blue Water Trail Towns Program.  Attendees will learn about local Blueway paddling trails\, how to find information on local greenway walking/cycling trails\, and what the region is doing to welcome recreationists.  She will also present information about handicapped accessible kayak/canoe launches in the area.  We are also developing a Blue Water Birding Trail that we will take a sneak peek at that evening!

SUMMARY:Michigan Butterfly Network: Citizen Science in Action!
DESCRIPTION:Ashley Wick\, Biological Research Director for the Kalamazoo Nature Center and director of Michigan Butterfly Network will be our guest speaker. Ashley will discuss butterfly biology\, life history\, identification\, and their local importance. Ways the average citizen can study\, conserve and monitor butterflies in their own communities will be discussed. Butterflies are powerful indicators of the quality and health of ecosystems. Sensitive to land use and habitat changes\, many of our butterfly species have been declining in abundance due to habitat loss\, fragmentation\, and climate change. In order to gain a picture of butterfly population patterns and trends\, we need to monitor butterflies in the field when they are most active. Monitoring butterfly populations throughout the years will allow us to better understand butterfly ecology\, population changes\, and to direct attention to species in decline before it is too late. The presentation will last 45 minutes and meets at the St. Clair County Administration Building Auditorium\, 200 Grand River Avenue\, Port Huron.

SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes: Reclaiming Our Water
DESCRIPTION:Our February monthly speaker series will be led by Patty Troy\, Lab Manager at the Port Huron Waste Water Treatment Plant. Patty will take us on a virtual tour of the plant’s inner workings where about 8 million gallons of wastewater are cleaned and returned to the St. Clair River every day! The tour will include discussion of water treatment processes\, permitted pollutant discharges to the river\, laboratory testing\, and biosolids recycling for agricultural purposes. SUMMARY:Life in Our Rivers: A Freshwater Mussel Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Led by Dave Dortman\, a local freshwater mussel enthusiast and naturalist\, he will discuss mussel biology\, life history\, identification\, and their local importance. Dozens of local mussel species will be brought in for handling and identification. Of Michigan’s 45 native mussels\, 19 are listed as endangered or threatened. Locally\, the Belle River supports Michigan’s most diverse and endangered mussel population. A significant mussel population is a direct reflection on the health of a river — the more mussels\, the healthier the water. The presentation will last 45 minutes.
