DESCRIPTION:Here’s your chance to join the Stream Team! We’re offering a free training to people who are interested in this fun and easy way to help monitor the health of our local creeks\, rivers\, and streams.\nDuring this training\, we will teach you how to use nets and buckets to easily scoop up the tiny insects and snails that give us clues to water quality. We use tweezers and spoons to pick through any debris on a freshwater treasure hunt to find the rare “bugs” that do not tolerate pollution and more. This event will prepare you to join our other Stream Team members at upcoming monitoring events that take place in the fall\, winter\, and spring seasons annually.\nThis event is open to new and returning volunteers\, and to people of all ages and backgrounds. Children must be accompanied and monitored by their adult. All tools and gear are provided. You bring your own boots or waders\, water\, snacks\, and bug repellant. We meet in front of the lodge at 10am at Columbus County Park\, 1670 Bauman Rd\, Columbus MI\, 48063. DESCRIPTION:We are so excited to host our first ever Monarch Butterfly Tagging Training! Monarch Butterflies have been added to the The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species which means that monarchs have been assessed by the IUCN and have been recognized to have a continually decreasing population. They are currently listed at “Least concern” which means that this tagging is especially important for collecting data to help us better understand monarchs\, protect them\, and get them off of this list!\nThe Monarch Watch Tagging Program is a large-scale community science project that was initiated in 1992 to help understand the dynamics of the monarch’s spectacular fall migration through mark and recapture. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Adopt-a-Beach cleanup on Saturday\, Sept. 19\, 2026 from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM at Lakeside Beach! Lakeside Beach address is 3670 Gratiot Ave in Port Huron. \nVolunteers will pick up items washed ashore or left behind by beachgoers and record the types and quantity of trash found. At the end\, all trash will be weighed to see how much was collectively cleaned up.\nAdopt-A-Beach is an initiative through the Alliance for the Great Lakes to clean beaches and collect data on plastic pollution. The data from this cleanup will be submitted to help with this Great Lakes-wide effort to keep litter out of the lakes.\nBags\, gloves and buckets are provided. SUMMARY:Stream Team: Fall Monitoring @ Pine River Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the St. Clair and the rest of the Stream Team! During this event\, volunteers enter local rivers and streams on a hunt for the tiny aquatic insects that hold clues to water quality. These tiny bugs have different levels of pollution tolerance\, and we hope to find a diverse amount of them living in our local waterways.\nThis event is held at two different locations at the same time. More sites may be added as registration fills.-Columbus County Park\, 1670 Bauman Road\, Columbus\, MI. Meet at the lodge.-Pine River Nature Center\, 2585 Castor Road\, Goodells\, MI. Meet at the parking lot.\nThis event is free of charge and open to all ages and abilities. Bring your own water\, snacks\, waders or rain boots. We supply the rest of the gear such as nets and picking tools. Waders are available to borrow on a first-come first served basis.\nEmail Melissa at melissa@scriver.org to register! DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the St. Clair River for our longest running eco-stewardship project every Tuesday at 10am from April 28th to October 27th!\nThe Blue Water River Walk is a 1-mile stretch of restored shoreline on the St. Clair River in downtown Port Huron. Invasive plants along the Blue Water River Walk are among the greatest threats to wildlife habitat because they outcompete the native plants that wildlife need for food and shelter.\n\nWe work every Tuesday morning to remove invasive plants\, care for native plants\, and monitor pollinators\, birds and other wildlife.\n\nBecome a community scientist and hone your identification skills by attending a Tuesday Trek! All ages\, abilities\, and experience levels are welcome.\n\nLocation: 2210 Military Street (SOUTH entrance of park). Look for the Blue Water River Walk County Park sign.
